Dora the Explorer
I watched a Dora the Explorer with my three-year-old daughter in which Swiper the Fox is hiding in a trash can and stalking Dora and Boots. When suspicions arise over repeated sightings of the receptacle, Swiper says — in character as the garbage can — that it is just a trash can.
Dora asks us to think about this: “Do trash cans talk?”
This from a show in which animals, maps, and backpacks all have the power of speech. I glanced at my daughter, wondering what answer the twisted internal logic of the show might elicit from her, but she withheld judgment on the matter.
