Mr. Turtle’s Reading of ‘Little Wing,’ et. al.

Green Sea Turtle on Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Hawaii

This is a guest post by Mr. Turtle. He loves music, and he does that thing people do where they’ll quote song lyrics. Some other people find this annoying, I realize. For myself, I may or may not enjoy seeing this kind of “thing,” depending on quality and quantity considerations.

Mr. Turtle has impeccable good taste and a keen sense for appropriately shareable snippets. I’ll turn it over now to him…

The Church of Martin Sexton

Martin Sexton: Unity

“Are you livin the life that you always dreamed of?”

Welcome to Brother Martin’s traveling salvation show.

Worship services are commonly held in a theater. Last weekend I was blessed to have attended twice: at the Majestic in Madison, Wisconsin, and the Fitzgerald in St. Paul, Minnesota.

We rocked and rolled and filled our souls.

As far as I can tell, the main tenets of the Church of Martin are Peace and Love, Unity, Freedom, and Dreams.

Chasing your dreams.

Dreams of freedom?

We give thanks to failure in the Church of Martin, for it can make dreams come true. The dreams that choose me and you.

Brother Martin calls out to Jesus, Allah, the Higher Power, and the Universe to help us in our journey.

He gives us this meditation: Hop the dog!

From the Kitchen Table: new Martin Sexton!

Boom Sh-Boom

I’m very excited about a new Martin Sexton album (Sugarcoating) and a new tour. And as an added bonus, the Ryan Montbleau Band will be opening for Martin and performing as his backing band. Congratulations, RMB, you guys deserve this.

I have tickets for a Saturday night show in Madison, Wisconsin, and the next night in St. Paul, Minnesota. It’s going to be so freaking awesome. Maybe after that I’ll follow them down to New Orleans. We’ll just see how it goes…

Martin Sexton at the Fitzgerald Theater

There was great energy from the crowd, both during Ryan Montbleau‘s opening performance and during Martin. I enjoyed being part of this gathering of fans, sharing the experience. Normally I don’t care for crowds that much, but as the show went on I really felt connected with the audience in our mutual love for the music and the man.

A couple of times between songs, during the applause and cheering, a woman’s voice would call out, “I love you Martin!” And he would quietly reply, “I love you too,” or “I love you too, cousin.” I could have expressed the same sentiment. I’m so grateful to him for his music and for sharing his gift with us. I didn’t feel comfortable shouting out my feelings as clearly, so I settled for showing my love and appreciation by clapping and loudly whooping and hollering. He would acknowledge us with thank yous that felt quite sincere. I think he is genuinely grateful for the cheering and applause, even after thousands and thousands of shows.

I’ve been holdin’ on to this ticket…

At last! Martin Sexton at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. The “Solo” tour.

Martin Sexton: Happy

Martin Sexton, ‘Hallelujah’

Martin Sexton, Hallelujah

Absolutely loving Black Sheep and Wonder Bar, and I’ve already ordered two more of his albums: In the Journey and The American. I may have missed out on years of listening enjoyment, but now I get to experience it all for the first time. Woo Hoo!

I read some of the comments on Amazon about Black Sheep, and see that lots of squares like me first discovered Sexton by hearing “Diner” on Scrubs. At least one nimrod complained because every song on the album wasn’t just like “Diner.” Oh, man. It’s so sad that this philistine was given the opportunity to enjoy such emotional and powerful …

Mah Na Mah Na » Scrubs » Martin Sexton, ‘Diner’

It all started when I had my daughter sitting on my lap and I decided to play for her the Muppets “Mah Na Mah Na” video.

Update, 17 July 2011: Maybe it’s just not worth it, embedding YouTube videos that are always getting taken down. I’ve tried with more than one version of this clip, and they keep getting taken down by barbarian copyright holders. Also the Scrubs outtake video mentioned below, although not the clip from the show embedded below. Yet. And the Scrubs/Muppet clip has been taken down by the user. The whole chain of causality that led me to Martin has been broken. Sigh.

Which she seems to enjoy. (Me too!) In the related clips, I saw one for “The Muppets meet [Scrubs]“, and watched that one also. I love Scrubs. …
